Leadership Committee

Association of Volunteer Administrators of Central Arizona (AVACA) 2023-2024 Leadership Committee

Susan Nusall (Board Member Emeritus)

Susan is the Lead Director of Community Engagement for the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services Arizona Bar Foundation and engages volunteers to assist with the legal services and Law-Related Education programs administered by the Foundation.

Her credentials include Certified Volunteer Administrator and Non-Profit Administration. She has been with the Foundation since 1996, and her background covers over 35 years of working with non-profit organizations, including volunteer administration, training, victim assistance, and serving on various Board of Directors.

“Being in community with some of the most generous and caring individuals I know is the reason my passion centers around volunteer engagement. I LOVE my job and the people it brings into my life on a daily basis. Together we make a difference in the lives of those we touch!

I am the mother of twin daughters and find such joy in being a grandmother to my “snuggle puppy” grandson!”

Susan has been responsible for tracking of our spending and membership registrations, while ensuring that all new members get added to our roster and receive a copy of the book club selection. As Susan plans for retirement at the end of 2023 (congrats!) she will be transitioning these roles to other committee members.

“I joined AVACA in 2014 when I was new to the field of volunteer engagement, and I’ve met so many great people and learned so much from them over these past years.  It’s been a tremendously rewarding experience.”

An Arizona native, Brandon enjoys running, hiking, reading, and the arts.

Informational Meetings Specialist

Brandon coordinates when and where our Morning Mixers will be held, including working to make sure we have fun and interesting speakers to hear from. Do you know someone who would like to share their knowledge with us? Share their contact information with bchapman@scottsdaleaz.gov.

Mars de La Tour (they/them)

“As an advocate and ambassador for the missions of progressive nonprofit organizations, I am motivated by a commitment to improving the quality of life in our communities.

My dedication to volunteer engagement extends beyond my professional work as I dedicate my free time to the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix as the Service and Participation Director. Making connections, strengthening relationships, and inspiring people to serve in ways that excite them amplifies my joy and pays returns with growth and success for everyone involved.

If you happen upon me wandering along a forest creek or through the library stacks, please ask about my cats and my next big speech. I’d love to hear your story, too!”

Book Club Specialist

Mars coordinates our Book Club Meetings, including guiding our discussions over breakfast.

Is there a book that you think we might enjoy reading and discussing in the future?  Send your suggestions to mars.delatour@hsgp.org.

Shoshana Simones

“I am currently the part-time Community Engagement Manager for Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit providing free primary healthcare to the uninsured across the Valley. Prior to MOM, I spent six years with Make-A-Wish Arizona as a Wish Manager, where I planned over 500 wishes for children with critical illnesses.

From 2010-2011 I served on the AVACA Board while working as the volunteer coordinator at Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona. I was the PR Chair and even designed the “puzzle piece” AVACA logo! I gave our logo a refresh in 2022, as well.

I also run a small marketing firm where I create content and manage email marketing and social media for a variety of businesses.

I have two daughters, a son, and a giant Labradoodle named Booker. I love sushi, art, and sports!”

Communications Specialist & Web Guru

Shoshana sends out monthly communications via email and keeps our website up to date, adding information as suggested.  Have suggestions?  Send them to shoshana@avacaaz.org

Sherry is the Volunteer Coordinator for Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, AZ.  She has a bachelor’s in Healthcare Administration and is a Certified Volunteer Administrator.  “I’ve worked in both the for-profit and nonprofit space over the years and find joy in helping those in our community.  I joined AVACA in 2018 as a way to connect with those in my field, and the experience has been priceless!  I’m married with an adult son, two cats, a Great Dane, and Border Collie.  In my spare time, I love reading, hiking, biking, and yoga.”
